Wireless carriers are changing how they support legacy distributed antenna systems (DAS), creating new operational responsibilities for many building owners. Organizations that previously relied on, and benefited from, carrier support and funding participation for portions of their in-building cellular infrastructure are now evaluating how those systems will be managed going forward.
For many, the first indication of that shift is a carrier notice announcing changes to their support for an existing DAS. While those notices often raise concerns about whether the system will continue operating, they do not necessarily indicate that the DAS has reached the end of its useful life. More often, they signal a change in how the system will be supported moving forward.
For years, many DAS deployments operated with some level of carrier involvement, including initial funding and ongoing operational support. As carriers modernize their networks and move away from supporting certain legacy infrastructure, responsibility for RF signal sources and ongoing system management, maintenance, and repair is shifting to property owners. The infrastructure installed throughout the building may continue to provide reliable coverage, but maintaining that performance increasingly falls to the organization that owns the building and relies on that service.
This shift extends well beyond hospitality. Office buildings, healthcare campuses, convention centers, mixed-use developments, higher education facilities, retail centers, and hotels all rely on dependable indoor cellular coverage to support daily operations. In many cases, property owners are now making wireless infrastructure decisions that were once handled through carrier relationships.
At the same time, the role and importance of cellular connectivity inside commercial buildings has increased significantly. Reliable coverage now supports tenant communications, hybrid work environments, clinical workflows, mobile check-in and digital room keys, point-of-sale transactions, facilities management, security operations, and emergency response. As more operational processes depend on mobile connectivity, indoor cellular coverage has become another critical building system.
Receiving a carrier notice is a good opportunity to evaluate the existing infrastructure before making any long-term decisions. Understanding which components are affected, whether the DAS continues to perform as designed, how system health is monitored, and what the long-term maintenance strategy looks like provides a much clearer picture of the options available. In many cases, those conversations focus on preserving existing infrastructure rather than replacing it.
Before developing a replacement strategy, building owners should answer three questions:
What equipment is actually affected? A carrier notice may not apply to every part of the DAS.
What is the condition of the existing system? A performance assessment can help determine whether the infrastructure continues to meet the building’s coverage requirements.
Who will support the system moving forward? Once carrier support changes, someone is still responsible for monitoring performance, coordinating maintenance, planning equipment replacement, and responding to issues as they arise.
Starting with those questions often leads to a different conversation than starting with, “How much will it cost to replace the system?”
That shift in responsibility is also changing how organizations manage DAS over the long term. Like access control, video surveillance, HVAC, or fire and life safety systems, in-building cellular infrastructure requires ongoing monitoring, maintenance, lifecycle planning, and technical support.
