Motorola’s Energy and Battery Efficiency Features for MOTOTRBO™ Radios
Communications across all industries – from manufacturing floors and public safety agencies to energy utilities and field services – depend on battery life as much as radio performance. That’s why Motorola Solutions has engineered a suite of advanced battery and energy management technologies to maximize uptime, ensure user safety, and eliminate power-related disruptions.
These features are available across Motorola’s most trusted MOTOTRBO™ radio platforms, including the XPR3000e and XPR7000e Series, R2, R5, and R7 portable radios, and the MOTOTRBO Ion smart radio. Below, we explore the full range of Motorola’s energy efficiency technologies – designed to extend battery life, increase operational visibility, and improve safety.
IMPRES™ Energy: Smarter Batteries for Longer Life
Applicable Models: XPR3000e, XPR7000e, R2, R5, R7, Ion
Standard batteries can leave you stranded at critical moments. With IMPRES™ Energy, your radio, battery, and charger work together to monitor and optimize energy usage for extended performance and long-term reliability.
Key Benefits
- Smart Lifecycle Monitoring: Radios and chargers track the internal state of battery cells, providing early warnings when a battery nears the end of life.
- Optimized Reconditioning: IMPRES chargers automatically initiate deep discharge/recharge cycles to maximize battery cell health.
- Reduced Waste and Cost: Replace only the batteries that need it – eliminate unnecessary replacements and reduce spare inventory.
Longer Battery Life: IMPRES batteries typically last 40% longer than conventional models.
IMPRES™ Battery Management Application (BMA):
Actionable Insights for Smarter XPR3000e, XPR7000e, R2, R5, R7, Ion Radio Battery Maintenance
IMPRES™ Battery Management brings your entire battery fleet into view by logging health, usage, and lifecycle data for every IMPRES battery.
Features of IMPRES Battery Management Application
- Real-time monitoring when batteries are docked in IMPRES chargers
- Recordkeeping of battery age, serial number, type, charge cycles, and health
- USB or Ethernet connectivity to upload battery data to the Battery Management Application (BMA)
Outcomes of Deploying IMPRES Battery Management Application
- Identify batteries nearing end-of-life before failure
- Correct improper charging practices across teams
- Track lost or missing batteries
- Reduce total cost of ownership through smarter planning and fewer spares
IMPRES™ OTA Battery Management
Over-the-Air Battery Health Monitoring for XPR3000e, XPR7000e, R2, R5, and R7 Radios
IMPRES OTA eliminates the need for physical charger connectivity by transmitting battery health data over the MOTOTRBO radio network. Whether using a direct MNIS IP connection or a control station, your battery data is always available.
Highlights of IMPRES OTA Battery Management
- Battery data is registered 1 hour after power-up and refreshed every 21 days
- Can request manual reads for urgent battery status checks
- Maintains a complete historical record in the Battery Management Application
- Perfect for large or geographically dispersed fleets
This feature was introduced in software release 2.4.
Low Voltage Battery Technology
Unlocking Extended Battery Life for R2, R5, R7, XPR3000e, XPR7000e, and Ion Radios
Motorola’s Low Voltage Battery feature increases talk time without increasing battery size or weight. Traditional radios shut down at 6V – but low-voltage-enabled radios operate down to 5V, giving you more usable power per charge.
How Low Voltage Battery Technology Works
- Batteries remain nominally rated at 7.4V
- Standard radios shut off at 6V, leaving unused energy
- Low-voltage radios keep working down to 5V
- Up to 27 hours of battery life in real-world usage
- Introduced in software release 2.5, this feature requires low-voltage-compatible batteries and radios.
Compatible Battery Detection: Avoid Non-Approved Battery Risks
Applicable Models: XPR3000e, XPR7000e, R2, R5, R7, Ion
Motorola radios can detect when a non-approved (non-MSI) battery is attached. The system alerts the user with an “Unknown Battery” warning and audible tone, helping prevent reduced performance or safety risks.
- Ion models go a step further – approved chargers will not charge incompatible batteries at all.
- Feature ensures users only use batteries tested and validated for MOTOTRBO systems.
- Available starting with software release 2.10.0.
Battery End-of-Service-Life (EoSL) Timer: Know Exactly When to Replace Your Battery
Applicable Models: XPR3000e, XPR7000e, R2, R5, R7, Ion
With the Battery EoSL Timer, radios automatically notify users when an IMPRES battery falls below 60% efficiency, helping prevent unexpected failures in the field.
Notification Methods for the Battery EoSL Timer
- Display radios: On-screen alert
- Non-display radios: Voice alert at power-up
