Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of innovation, from marketing strategies to public safety measures.

Drew Weston – MCA’s Director of National Accounts – gave two presentations at the Global Security Exchange (GSX) 2023 conference, discussing AI, automation, and integrated technology. The two presentations were titled:

Maximizing Limited Resources Through Technology Integration and Automation

One of the immediate challenges with handling vast amounts of data is the sheer volume. With video surveillance, for example, it’s nearly impossible for a single human – or even a team of people – to review every second of video footage that’s recorded at a single location. AI encompasses a range of technologies, including natural language processing, computer vision, supervised learning, and more. Each of these technologies serves a specific purpose, making understanding their nuances and applications essential.

By allowing AI to analyze video streams and quickly examine videos for suspicious and/or malicious behaviors, people can focus on reviewing only those deemed critical events. Additionally, organizations can replace anecdotal information with precise data by employing technologies like people counting, vehicle counting, and occupancy tracking.

Meanwhile, acoustic sensors are capable of identifying unique sound patterns, such as human voices, machinery noises, or even potential threats like weapons. These sensors monitor sound and detect agitation levels, providing a tool to address issues discreetly, like disturbances in restrooms, without compromising privacy.

One of the AI’s most impressive features is its ability to correlate data from various sources. For example, when an AI system detects agitated or aggressive voices in a restroom, it can simultaneously provide a video feed from the nearby hallway so that security personnel can review the video and see who entered the room before confronting the situation while also listening to the audio stream to monitor the conversation.

Natural language processing – where AI listens, understands, and encodes conversations – also has an opportunity to play a huge part in providing security or law enforcement context and advanced situational awareness. For instance, AI-enhanced body cameras can annotate audio streams, making language searchable. This means that you can search for video events and specific spoken content, like card numbers or locations mentioned during a call.

From Reactive to Proactive: How AI and Automation Can Speed Response Time in Critical Incidents

AI enhances efficiency and automation. In a scenario where various technologies collaborate seamlessly, AI can automate responses to events, such as dispatching responders, providing video feeds, and beginning the process of completing documentation – such as incident reports. This integration allows organizations to respond faster and more effectively.

AI can also adapt and improve its performance over time through supervised learning and feedback. By providing feedback on system alerts, we can fine-tune the AI to distinguish between genuine threats and false positives, making it more reliable and efficient.
